Art Docent Program

The purpose of this program is to help bring additional art experiences to the students of Fairwood.  It is not intended to replace the formal art instruction that our classroom teachers plan to bring to their students.  The program runs October through May.

Art Curriculum

The Fairwood PTSA is teaming up with Smart with Art to provide art curriculum that meet or exceeds both the Washington State Standards and the National Standards for the Art Education.  Smart with Art will provide our team of volunteers with the training and materials to present high quality visual arts programs to our students.

Art Walk / Family Art Night

Our Art Walk is scheduled for May 15, 2018.  We will have LOTS of student artwork up in the hallways showcasing their hard work this year!  We hope to again have a few art stations set up in the gym and a fun photo booth.  We are asking the art docent volunteers to keep all the art the students create so we can display them at the Art Walk Family Fun Night.

How it Works

We need approximately 18 volunteer Art Docents to teach monthly art lessons from October through April (~ 6 art lessons).  There will be an online sign up (SignUpGenius) and a paper sign up at the Teacher Meet 'n Greet and Back to School event for you to volunteer to the class or classes of your choice.  To sign up to volunteer as an art docent, please click HERE.

Please note, before you can teach in the classroom you will need to complete an online volunteer application and disclosure form.  This must be done every year.  Click HERE for more information and link to the online application process.

Why is Art Education important?

Research shows that involvement in arts education can help ensure a child's success in school and life! Americans for the Arts report that young people (regardless of their socioeconomic status) who consistently participate in art programs are:

  • 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
  • Being elected to class office within their schools more than 3 times as often
  • 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
  • 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
  • 4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem
