40th WSPTA Legislative Assembly Concludes
In October delegates from across the state attended the 40th annual WSPTA Legislative Assembly to learn, collaborate, debate and ultimately vote on our new 2-year platform.

Top five legislative priorities:
  1. Social Emotional Learning
  2. School Construction and Simple Majority for Bonds
  3. Prevent Gun Violence
  4. Strategies to Address the Teacher Shortage
  5. Strategic K-12 Investments to Close Gaps

To see the entire platform, please visit the website.

In addition, two new principles in the category "Health and Well-Being of Children and Youth" were approved. Four new resolutions (2.21 Sexual Violence and Harassment Prevention and Survivor Supports, 11.28 Mitigating the Health Effects of Climate Change, 18.35 Improving Outcomes in Special Education and 18.36 Equitable Access to Highly Capable Services) and one amended resolution (11.19 School Nutrition) were approved by the delegates.

And finally, check out Facebook to see a video of keynote speaker Chris Reykdal's opening remarks and the WSPTA blog for a wrap-up of the business of the weekend.

* Why is Tacoma listed as our city?  The Amazon Smile program gets their information about eligible charities from Washington Secretary of State.  The address shown on file is the address for our state PTA (WSPTA).  They are our registered agent with the IRS and the Washington Secretary of State.  The AmazonSmile program pulls data from the IRS filing forms and that is what is listed on our filing.

Battle of the Books

The "Battle of the Books" is a reading incentive program in elementary, middle school, and high schools across the country. Find out more about the district sponsored program HERE. Fairwood placed 3rd out of 26 schools this year!

Check out the Fairwood Battle of the Books blog for the 2018-19 list and some tips/hints.  Mrs. Keiser will help organize the groups.

In the fall, the school library will have all the Battle of the Books available to read. Through December any student can check out these books. Starting in January, only students participating in Battle of the Books will be able to check out these books.

Do you have a 4th - 6th grader? We are looking for volunteers! Please email Sheena Keiser (Fairwood Librarian) for more information.

Participating students will be invited to a morning social on January 18th in the library for fun, friends, prizes and treats!

Parents can join in the fun too! When kids see you reading they are more likely to read. Participate in the King County (KCLS) '10 to Try' challenge. You can pick up a bookmark at any KCLS location or use their online reading platform to track your reading.
